Product Description

Phosphatidylserine is an important membrane phospholipid found in bacteria, yeast, plants, and mammalian cells. Also known as complex nerve acid or PS, it is extracted from the residue of soybean oil. It is an active substance in cell membranes, particularly in brain cells. Its primary function is to improve nerve cell function, regulate nerve impulse transmission, and enhance brain memory. Due to its strong lipophilicity, it quickly crosses the blood-brain barrier, soothes vascular smooth muscle cells, and increases brain blood supply.

Phosphatidylserine Production Process

Phosphatidylserine, naturally present in foods and breast milk, is found in higher concentrations in meats and fish, and especially in brain and organs (like liver and kidneys). It is very low in dairy products and vegetables (except legumes). Industrial production methods include extraction and enzymatic biotransformation. The process uses soybean lecithin and L-serine as raw materials, undergoing phospholipase transformation, purification, and concentration, followed by secondary purification and drying to produce a pale yellow powder. Production methods are divided into extraction and enzymatic biotransformation, with the latter being the main global process due to higher safety and efficiency. Animal extraction methods are outdated due to safety concerns, while plant extraction methods are resource-rich but costly and not widely used.

Phosphatidylserine Benefits and Uses

  1. Helps maintain cell membrane flexibility and enhances the efficiency of neurotransmitters transmitting brain signals, promoting efficient brain function and activation. Initially used for preventing dementia in the elderly, recent studies show that phosphatidylserine benefits younger individuals as well. A recent study from Israel found that volunteers taking phosphatidylserine supplements showed significant improvements in memory recall, cognitive flexibility, and immediate recall. In China, a study by the Third Military Medical University on 120 high school seniors showed significant improvement in memory, with some memory indices increasing by over 20% in the short term.
  2. Can safely enhance memory in the short term, as phosphatidylserine increases the number of brain spikes, fluidity of brain cell membranes, and glucose metabolism in brain cells, leading to greater brain cell activity, improved attention, alertness, and memory.
  3. Helps alleviate brain fatigue and repair brain cell damage. Due to this unique function, phosphatidylserine supplements are widely used before exams for nutritional support.

Phosphatidylserine Applications

Currently, there are few phosphatidylserine products available for daily consumption in China. Common products include Nature’s Bounty Memory Formula, GNC Phosphatidylserine, Puritan’s Pride Brain Phosphatidylserine, Baolimei’s algae oil DHA softgels with added phosphatidylserine, and Brain Gold Phosphatidylserine DHA complex tablets. Given its excellent cognitive benefits for children, more domestic products with phosphatidylserine are emerging. In April 2015, Shijiazhuang Junlebao Dairy Co., Ltd. launched the first domestic children’s milk powder with added phosphatidylserine.

Plant Source - Soybean

Soybean (Glycine max (Linn.) Merr.) is an annual herbaceous plant in the legume family. Soybeans contain 35%–40% protein and are rich in high-quality protein. Originally from China, soybeans are now widely cultivated worldwide. They are an important crop in China with a cultivation history of over 5,000 years. Soybeans are commonly used to make various soybean products, extract soybean oil, brew soy sauce, and extract protein. Soybeans are ideal for plant-based protein and contribute to human growth, development, and health. They are also widely used in the candy industry, pharmaceuticals, paper making, and tanning.
