Plant Source—Peony

Peony (Scientific Name: Paeonia lactiflora Pall.) is also known as Jiangli, Licorice grass, Lanwei spring, Yuyong, Liushi, Bugu flower, and Hei Qian. It is a perennial herbaceous plant of the Ranunculaceae family and Peony genus. The roots are robust and dark brown. In China, Peonies are found in Jiangsu, Northeast China, North China, Shaanxi, and southern Gansu, and are also cultivated in parks in Sichuan, Guizhou, Anhui, Shandong, Zhejiang, and other provinces and cities. Peony is an economically valuable plant for both medicinal and ornamental purposes. The root, known as "White Peony," is used medicinally; the seeds, which contain about 25% oil, are used for soap and paint production. Peonies are traditional Chinese flowers suitable for specialized flower beds, flower borders, or scattered plantings in forests, rocky areas, and courtyards. They are also suitable for pot cultivation and fresh cut flowers. The tuberous roots can be used in medicine. Cultivated Peonies, after being dug up and peeled, become White Peony, containing paeoniflorin, paeonol, β-sitosterol, benzoic acid, and calcium oxalate. It has a slightly cold nature and a bitter, sour taste, and functions to regulate the liver and spleen and nourish the blood. It is used for treating blood deficiency, abdominal pain, hypochondriac pain, dysentery, irregular menstruation, and bleeding disorders. Wild Peony roots, cleaned after being dug up, become Red Peony, which has a slightly cold nature, bitter taste, and functions to cool the blood and disperse blood stasis. The seeds contain about 25% oil and are used for soap and paint.
